What are Thermal Covers?
Thermal barrier solutions are designed to cover palletized products to provide an enclosed thermal environment, that passively manages product temperature during storage and transport. Thermal covers feature a robust air cylinder material, covered with a metallic foil, which reflects radiant heat and reduces both convective and conductive heat. Thermal covers can be used effectively as a secondary form of protection in conjunction with temperature-controlled shippers.
What are TIC and BRIC?
TICs (Thermal Insulation Chambers) are plastic chambers containing PCM Coolant (Phase Change Material) and are used our Credo™ reusable parcel and bulk solution portfolio. TICs come in a wide number of sizes but are predominantly square or rectangular in shape. TICs are conditioned in freezers or refrigerators, depending on the phase change point of the selected PCM. TICs are very durable and can have a life in excess of 10 years.
BRIC coolants consist of a foam material, impregnated with PCM and encapsulated with a plastic film. BRICs are a single-use product, used in CoolGuard™ and some CoolPall™ products. BRICs for CoolGuard products feature location ‘ears’ which slot into the EPS insulation securely. BRICs for CoolPall products are further incased in corrugate sleeves which are subsequently fitted into coolant pods. BRICs are conditioned in freezers or refrigerators, depending on the phase change point of the selected PCM.
What is Phase Change Material (PCM)?
Phase Change Material (PCM) is a substance that absorbs or releases energy during a phase change (e.g., solid to liquid), providing consistent thermal control. PCMs are ideal for temperature-controlled shipping applications across industry-standard ranges such as -20°C, +2°C to +8°C, and +15°C to +25°C. Combined with high-performance insulation, PCMs can maintain stable temperatures for over 120 hours. They are typically found in bottle, TIC (Thermal Insulation Chamber), or encapsulated foam BRIC forms.
What is a VIP?
A VIP (Vacuum Insulation Panel) is a type of high-performance insulation, offering greatly increased insulative performance over common materials such as expanded polystyrene (EPS).
A vacuum insulation panel comprises a rigid core panel, made from a compressed fumed silica, from which any air has been evacuated. The compressed panel is then tightly encapsulated in a metallic film, which ensures the core remains air and watertight.
The advantages of VIPs over traditional insulation include much better thermal performance for weight and thickness, which means in the case of temperature-controlled shippers, outer product dimensions are reduced, relative to the interior space for the payload.
What is a Nested VIP (Vacuum Insulation Panel)?
Nested VIP is a double-layer insulation option for certain Crēdo Cube™ products. This configuration increases insulation and extends duration while reducing payload space. For example, a single VIP setup might provide 96 hours of duration, while a nested VIP can extend that to 168 hours.
What is Dry Ice?
Dry Ice is solid carbon dioxide (CO₂) used in frozen or deep-frozen shipping applications. With a unique sublimation property, Dry Ice transitions directly from solid to gas at -79°C (-110°F), eliminating a liquid phase. Available in pellet or block form, Dry Ice requires special handling due to its extremely low temperatures. We offer Dry Ice-compatible versions of Crēdo Cube™, NanoCool™ Universal products, and Sherpa™.
How is the 96L Crēdo Cube different?
A Kraft Box is a durable corrugate container used with some Crēdo Cube products for additional protection.
What is the shelf life of a coolant?
Coolant shelf life varies by product: TICs for Crēdo Cube last about 10 years, VIPs last 5 years, CoolBRICs for CoolGuard™ last 2 years, and NanoCool cooling engines have a 2-year lifespan. All coolants should be inspected regularly per User Guidelines to ensure optimal performance. You can access Product User Guides and more in the Resources Section by creating a customer profile.
