National First Responders Day on October 28 is a day to celebrate and acknowledge first responders for the brave and skillful work they do to save lives. The day was made official in 2017, but was inspired by Andrew Collier, the brother of a police officer killed in the Boston Marathon bombing.
First responders are the firefighters, policemen, paramedics and more who are first on the scene when disaster strikes. They are equipped with life-saving techniques such as CPR and medication administration to treat patients on-site and before arriving at the hospital, resulting in more lives saved.
